Screen Capture is SignalRGB's technology that analyzes what's displayed on your monitor and translates it into dynamic RGB lighting effects. Whether you're gaming, watching movies, listening to music, or just browsing, Screen Capture creates an immersive ambient lighting experience that extends your screen's content into your physical space.
What is Screen Capture?
Screen Capture continuously monitors your display and processes the visual information to generate responsive lighting effects. Unlike static RGB effects that play the same pattern regardless of what you're doing, Screen Capture creates lighting that adapts in real-time to match your on-screen content.
This technology powers two major features in SignalRGB:
- Screen Mirroring Effects: General ambient lighting that mirrors your screen's colors
- Game Integration Effects: Specialized effects designed for specific games with custom event triggers
How It Works
Screen Capture analyzes your display at a configurable frame rate (adjustable in Settings > Application > Video) and processes the visual information to determine:
- Dominant colors on different areas of your screen
- Brightness and contrast levels
- Color transitions and movement
- Specific visual patterns (for Game Integration Effects)
This information is then translated into lighting commands sent to your RGB devices, creating an ambient glow that mirrors and extends your screen content into your room.
Screen Ambience Effects
Screen Ambience is the foundation of Screen Capture technology. It creates ambient lighting that reflects what's on your screen, making your entire setup feel more immersive.
How it works:
- Your screen is divided into zones to interpret display information and determine dominant colors
- Those colors are mapped to corresponding devices in your layout based on their position in the Canvas
- The result is ambient lighting that mirrors your screen content
Common uses:
- Gaming: Your RGB reacts to game environments and action
- Movies and streaming: Immersive lighting that extends the cinematic experience
- Music players with visualizers: Lighting that responds to on-screen visualizers like those in Spotify, Apple Music, or standalone visualization apps
- General computer use: Subtle ambient lighting that adapts to what you're doing
Game Integration Effects
Game Integration Effects take Screen Capture to the next level with game-specific programming. These effects are built on top of Screen Ambience but add custom animations triggered by specific in-game events.

Requirements
Screen Capture works best with the following settings:
Display Configuration:
- Fullscreen Borderless mode (Windowed or Fullscreen modes won't work)
- HDR disabled (both in-game and Windows Display Settings)
- Primary display (if using multiple monitors)
System Requirements:
- Screen capture permissions enabled in Windows Privacy settings
- SignalRGB running with proper permissions
Not Required:
- Pro subscription for basic Screen Ambience (Pro required for Game Integration Effects)
- Specific hardware - works with any SignalRGB-supported RGB device
Customization Options
Screen Capture offers several ways to customize your experience:
Capture Settings (Settings > Application > Video):
- Capture Frame Rate - Higher rates = more responsive but use more resources
- Monitor Select - Choose which monitor to capture (multi-monitor setups)
- Compatibility Mode - Enable if experiencing capture issues
Effect Settings (Lighting Tab):
- Brightness - Control overall lighting intensity
- Color adjustments - Some effects allow color customization
- Zone configuration - Control which devices respond to which screen areas
Performance Considerations
Screen Capture uses system resources to monitor your display and process visual information. SignalRGB is optimized to minimize performance impact, but the feature does require some CPU and GPU usage.
To optimize performance:
- Lower the capture frame rate in Settings > Application > Video
- Disable HDR (HDR significantly increases processing overhead)
- Close unnecessary background applications
- Use simpler Screen Ambience effects rather than complex Game Integrations
Most users experience minimal performance impact with default settings. If you notice FPS drops or stuttering, adjusting the capture frame rate usually resolves the issue.
Privacy and Security
Screen Capture only processes visual information locally on your computer. SignalRGB does not record, store, or transmit screen content. The technology analyzes colors and patterns to generate lighting commands - nothing more.
What Screen Capture does:
- Analyzes color and brightness information from your display
- Processes this information locally to generate lighting effects
- Sends RGB commands to your devices
What Screen Capture does NOT do:
- Record your screen
- Store screenshots or video
- Transmit screen content over the internet
- Access sensitive information displayed on your screen
Troubleshooting
If Screen Capture isn't working as expected:
For general Screen Capture issues:
- Verify your game/application is in Fullscreen Borderless mode
- Check Windows Privacy Settings for screen capture permissions
- Ensure SignalRGB is running with proper permissions
- Try toggling Compatibility Mode in capture settings
For Game Integration Effects specifically:
- See our Game Integration Effects Not Working As Expected guide
- Verify HDR is disabled
- Check that UI mods and scaling are at default settings
For detailed troubleshooting steps, see our Screen Capture Not Working As Expected guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Pro to use Screen Capture?
No!. Some free effects that leverage Screen Capture are available to all users, such as Screen Ambience and Soft Ambience. Pro is required for Game Integration Effects, which are game-specific versions of Screen Capture with custom event triggers, or other specific Pro effects that leverage the Screen Capture technology in more advanced ways.
Will Screen Capture affect my game performance?
SignalRGB is optimized for minimal performance impact. Most users notice no difference. If you do experience FPS drops, you can reduce the capture frame rate in settings.
Can I use Screen Capture with multiple monitors?
Yes! You'll need to select which monitor SignalRGB captures from in Settings > Application > Video > Monitor Select. The captured monitor should be where your game or primary content is displayed.
Does Screen Capture work with Netflix, YouTube, or streaming services?
Yes! Screen Capture works with most content displayed on your screen, including YouTube, Twitch, and web-based streaming services accessed through browsers.
However, some streaming apps use DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection that blocks screen capture. For example, the Netflix app installed from the Windows Store will appear as a black screen to SignalRGB. In these cases, try accessing the streaming service through a web browser instead (e.g., netflix.com in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox), which typically works without issues.
If you're experiencing black screen issues with streaming content, switching from a dedicated app to the browser version usually resolves the problem.
Why does Screen Capture require Fullscreen Borderless?
True Fullscreen mode uses exclusive display access that prevents screen capture from functioning. Fullscreen Borderless provides the same visual experience while allowing screen capture to work properly.
Is my screen content being recorded or sent anywhere?
No! Screen Capture processes visual information locally on your computer to generate lighting effects. Nothing is recorded, stored, or transmitted.
Can I disable Screen Capture?
Yes! Simply switch to any non-screen-capture effect in the Lighting tab. Screen Capture only runs when you're actively using an effect that requires it.
